기술의 발전으로 기존 음성 중심에서 데이터 중심으로 그 사용행태가 변화하면서, 통신 사업자들은 전례없던 트래픽 폭증을 경험하고 있다. ‘기가트래픽으로 대변되는 5G시대의 도입을 앞두고 있는 현재상황에서, 기존의 해결방안인 추가적인 장비도입으로는 급격하게 변화하는 네트워크 요구를 수용하기 어려우며, 또한 천문학적인 장비도입비용이 예상된다.

이러한 상황을 극복하기 위하여 통신사업자들을 중심으로 네트워크 기능 가상화(NFV; Network Function Virtualisation)라는 개념이 등장하였고, 점차 그 영향력이 확산되어가고 있다. NFVIT 분야에서 활발히 연구된 가상화 기술을 통신장비시장에 도입하고자 하는 것을 목표로 하고 있으며, 특히 범용적인 x86 COTS(Commercial Off-the-Shelf) 서버 위에 가상화를 바탕으로 네트워크 기능을 구현함으로써 더욱 저렴하고 효과적인 네트워크 기능 구현을 추구하는 개념이자 구조(Architecture)이다.

NFV는 설비투자비용(CAPEX; Capital Expenditure)을 감소시키는 것뿐 아니라 다양한 기대효과를 가지고 있다. 폐쇄적이었던 네트워크 장비시장을 누구나 참여할 수 있는 개방형 생태계로 탈바꿈함으로써 장비 종속성으로부터의 탈피는 물론이고, 벤더간의 경쟁과 협력, 다양한 구성원들의 참여로 인하여 더욱 혁신적인 서비스가 등장할 것으로 기대된다. 기존 네트워크 인프라에 영향을 미치지 않고서도 소프트웨어 기반의 기능 구현을 통하여 빠른 서비스 도입(Lower TTM; Time-to-Market)이 가능하다는 특성 또한 신규 서비스의 도입을 더욱 촉진하는 요인으로 작용할 것이다.

이 책은 ETSI NFV ISG에서의 큰 흐름을 바탕으로 NFV의 개념을 소개하고, 전반적인 시장 현황, 더 나아가 각 벤더와 그 제품에 대한 방대한 조사결과를 담아내었다. 이를 통하여 NFV 개념에 대한 이해와 더불어 시장에서의 다양한 시각을 파악해낼 수 있을 것으로 기대한다.
